Greenport Maritime Festival 2005
September 23rd, 24th & 25th
Each year, the village of Greenport shuts down its main thoroughfares and welcomes tens of thousands of revelers who descend upon the village to celebrate the area's rich maritime heritage. Now in its 19th year, the annual Greenport Maritime Festival, sponsored by the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation, has been synonymous with food, games and fun for the entire family.
The festival kicks off on Friday night, September 23, with a land & sea cocktail reception at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, as music from roaming musicians, the streets of Greenport come alive as the village's popular retail stores and restaurants spill onto the streets and join arts & crafts vendors to create a shopper's paradise. Maritime pirates roam the streets in an interactive role-play and children enjoy an array of activities that are both fun and educational. On the waterfront, visitors can view classic whaleboat races and a kayak derby while kids participate in the annual snapper contest.
Perhaps the most anticipated event, each year, is the festival's chowder contest, where visitors can sample and vote for their favorite New England and Manhattan Clam chowders, made by area restaurants. The chowder contest has become as anticipated among locals, as the festival itself, as restaurants vie to be the best chowder makers on the North Fork.
While the village encourages visitors to come by boat, train or bike, shuttle service is available from off site parking. For more information, visit the East End Seaport & Maritime Museum & Marine Foundation's website at www.eastendseaport.org.
This year, Jeanne Murphy, of Stirling Harbor Trattoria, in Greenport, has organized a raffle, which will take place during the Maritime Festival, in which all proceeds will benefit the victims of hurricane Katrina.
Prizes include gifts/donations from many area businesses.
